City of Asylum, Pittsburgh, PA
I learn…
I continue to expand on my definition/views of culture and culture. I enjoy hearing other’s ideas and research data from Dr. Chao, as I work with many ELL/refugee students and their families.
I plan to incorporate what I’ve learned in my daily nursing practice in the health office of a public middle school.
–school nurse
Very helpful discussion of culture (and culture!). Discussion of literacy of language as social practice. I look forward to applying these considerations in my work with immigrant and refugee students in elementary and middle school. Thank you!
–volunteer
Wow!! Xia [Dr. Chao] is amazing. First, I live in the suburbs, so and only vaguely familiar with Pittsburgh’s communities. I would like to turn some of this into possible peer training. However, my school has no refugee students and very few from non-American backgrounds.
–teacher
I learned how to better understand an individual’s background and how to incorporate that into my preparation for creating a safe teaching environment.
–substitute teacher
Thought the class would give specifics on refugee population in Pittsburgh, but it was a lot more enlightening. I think I will volunteer as and ESL teacher.
–interested person
Good teaching strategies. Application for ethnography!
–research health scientist
Learning is a social practice.
–ESL teacher
I learned how complex integrating cultural experience and adapting in new cultural immersion.
–social service
I learned many techniques and ways of thinking to be more “Culturally Competent” in my classroom. I learned that I need to be more perceptive about the Culture/culture and how they are intertwined to create unique identity.
I plan to create more “community” in my class where refugees are present, and to find non-threatening way to help children experience language.
–teaching assistant
The perspectives of refugees/non-native English speakers. Ideas for building bridges/systems to support students.
–school director
New and expanded ways of looking at culture and Culture. All info benefits my ability to do the best work I can with my families.
–family services specialist
I enjoyed hearing the stories of refugees. You [Dr. Chao] captured some important concepts that should be shared.
–ESL teacher
I learned that the learning process is to become a new person because his/her heritage and family environment is interrupted.
–ESL teacher
Big take away. Culture is identity.
–reading specialist
It strengthened my understanding of some of the challenges faced by teachers. Helped me to get some ideas on how to help my staff who works in the schools.
–program director
I think the data from her [Dr. Chao] research was valuable to learn from people’s own experience.
–a participant
Better understanding of culture and has to assist refugee students I work with.
–a participant
Information related to interpretation, understanding some immigrants face and how to help their transition into our country.
–certified school nurse
The data was extremely helpful.
–BBBS
It is critical to understand and appreciate where people are coming from, their previous situation, ad how that influences their present. As I consider teaching, I hope to create an inclusive, inviting, and cooperative atmosphere based on respect for my students.
