Dr. Xia Chao

Principal Investigator

Dr. Xia Chao is a faculty member of language and literacy education in the School of Education at Duquesne University. Dr. Chao’s research, which is grounded in perspectives and methods from educational linguistics, anthropology, and critical literacy, centers on investigating everyday language and literacy practices of socioculturally and linguistically diverse populations as well as the preparation of and professional development for teachers to work with English language learners.

Dr. Chao’s work contributes to understanding the complexity of and the intersection among language, literacy, culture, identity, and pedagogy in the multilingual and multicultural settings of home, community, and school. Dr. Chao’s work has been funded by the National Geographic Society as well as honored by the 2015 J. Michael Parker Award of the Literacy Research Association and the 2016 Outstanding Early Career Scholar Award of the American Educational Research Association’s Adult Literacy and Adult Education Special Interest Group.

Dr. Chao’s publications appear in diverse journals as Journal of Literacy Research, Anthropology and Education Quarterly, Language and Education, Linguistics and Education, Adult Education Quarterly, Teacher Education Quarterly, British Journal of Sociology of Education, Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies, Urban Education, and others, as well as in multiple book chapters.

Ms. Jianan Zhou

Instructional Technologist and Illustrator

Ms. Jianan Zhou is a doctoral candidate in the School of Education at Duquesne University with in-depth knowledge and ability to use multimedia software in the classroom, as well as making instructional e-books, websites, and tutorial videos. In this project, Ms. Zhou contributed to building the website and illustrating every single pictures of our stories.

Ms. Zhou’s research interests are focused on  teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), and has the biggest enthusiasm about teaching, especially in higher education and teacher education. Ms. Zhou believes that, as teachers, our role is not only teaching the knowledge but also building a better future for our students.
